Hard water in Riyadh: what it does to your heater and how to slow it down

Why elements fail in two years here, and the maintenance that doubles their life.

Water in most Saudi cities carries a high mineral load, and Riyadh is at the harder end of that range. Every litre heated leaves a little calcium and magnesium behind on the hottest surface in the system, which is the heating element. Over a couple of years that deposit becomes a hard crust.

What scale actually does

Scale is an insulator. As it thickens, the element has to run hotter and longer to heat the same tank, which raises your electricity use and eventually cracks the element sheath. Once water reaches the resistance wire inside, the element shorts to earth and trips the breaker. That is the failure mode behind most "no hot water and the breaker tripped" calls.

It also collects on the tank floor, where it traps steam pockets that produce the popping and rumbling sound people describe as the heater "boiling".

The maintenance that works

An annual descale — drain the tank, remove the element, dissolve and scrape the deposit, inspect the anode rod, refill — costs around 180 riyals and roughly doubles element life. In softer-water districts every 18 months is enough.

The anode rod matters more than most people realise. It is a sacrificial magnesium rod that corrodes so the steel tank does not. Once it is consumed, the tank starts to go, and a corroded tank cannot be repaired. Replacing a 60 riyal rod at the right moment is the difference between a descale and a new heater.

Whole-house options

A polyphosphate inline filter on the cold feed costs 350 to 600 riyals installed and noticeably slows deposition on elements and mixer cartridges. A full softener is 2,500 riyals and up, worth considering if you are also replacing mixers and shower cartridges every couple of years.

Signs you are already behind

Water that takes longer to heat than it used to, a popping tank, white crust around mixer outlets, or a shower that has lost pressure on the hot side only. Any of those means the deposit is well established, and a descale now will cost less than the element replacement that follows it.
